What is United Methodist Women (UMW)?
|
UMW is an organization of the United Methodist Church that's been around for a long time, even before we became the United Methodist Church in 1968. There are approximately one million members whose purpose is to foster spiritual growth, develop leaders and advocate for justice. It began as a mission oriented program for the women of the church and that mission emphasis remains to this day. In fact, that missional thinking is so strong that at the end of the year, our treasury is supposed to be empty because all the money should have been given away to missions- local missions, national missions and international missions.
The goal of United Methodist Women is to be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowShip; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. UMW is organized like the church in that there are local units, district units, conference units, and jurisdiction and national levels. According to the Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church, "In every local church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women." Membership shall be open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the Church through United Methodist Women.
Here at Grace, the UMW meets monthly on the third Tuesday each month. Generally the meetings are at the church and begin at 7 PM. There are special meetings held on Saturday mornings in May and December. The regular meetings begin with a devotion and then refreshments. Members take turns presenting the devotion and the food. Then a business meeting follows. After the business portion of the meeting is over there's programming, which may include working on a group project together, learning about a need in the community, studying a book. All the women of Grace are invited to join us. We are located at 9833 Hixson Pike in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee.
